Mail carriers can decide their own delivery route, and sometimes they scan the package as "delivered" just before they actually drop it off later that day.
It’s common for packages to be delivered 1 to 3 business days after the “delivered” scan — especially during busy periods.
In some cases, the parcel is left in a safe place, with neighbors, or even placed in the garden, garage, or behind furniture near the entrance.
Couriers may also redirect packages to a local pickup point if no one was home and a secure location wasn’t available.
